Arthur Hiller

Arthur HillerArthur Hiller graduated from Victoria High School in 1942, having made a name for himself as a student leader, coach of the girls' basketball team and performer in school dramas. Following his service in WWII, Arthur began a career in television in Toronto with CBC. He would be drawn soon after to NBC studios in New York, before moving to the west coast and settling in Hollywood, where he lives with his wife, Gwen, also a proud Edmontonian.

Arthur's illustrious film career includes directing such films as Man of La Mancha (Sir Peter O'Toole and Sophia Loren), Outrageous Fortune (Bette Midler and Shelley Long), The Americanization of Emily (James Garner and Julie Andrews) and the Oscar nominated Love Story (Ryan O'Neill and Ali McGraw). In 1998 Arthur was elected President of the Directors' Guild of America; a position he held until 1993. He then served as the President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, presiding over the Academy Awards from 1993-97. In 2002, Arthur was presented the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award; an Oscar recognizing his significant contributions to charitable causes. In 2002, he was honoured with a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in Toronto. In 2006, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.

In 1999, Arthur returned to Vic to assume the role of Honorary Chair of the Victoria School Foundation for the Arts and since that time has made annual trips to talk with students and offer Master Classes. His time with the students has always been inspirational and above all it has been a reminder that the work of the creative artist is challenging, but of utmost importance in the world. His messages have consistently been anchored by a strong sense of appreciation for one's roots and a commitment to doing the best work that you can in a manner that you can feel proud of in the end.
